There’s a growing trend of stores banning single-use plastic shopping bags, and celebrities like Sarah Michelle Gellar are getting prepared. The former Buffy the Vampire Slayer was recently spotted carrying several green reusable bags into Trader Joes. However, reusable bags aren’t just for the grocery store. Beach bag, overnight bag, gym bag, random stuff in the car bag, random bag of stuff in the living room you can’t be bothered to put away… life presents multiple opportunities to cart around, or hide, one’s stuff.
Rather than using an assemblage of old plastic and paper bags, take a cue from the celebrities (and fashion designers who are all about this trend) and consider introducing several cute, stylish reusable bags into your daily routine. Made out of canvas, cotton, and other eco-friendly materials, these totes come in all sizes, colors and designs so you can be sure to find the best reusable tote for your lifestyle and budget. During a prenatal yoga class, the words “Be Courageous” emerged in Andreea Ayers’ mind emblazoned on a t-shirt, and, in that moment, she divined the idea for Tees for Change. Four months pregnant at the time, Ayers decided it was time to take the concept of total life change to the fullest. She combined her passion for a natural, holistic lifestyle with her marketing background to create Tees for Change, organic tees that celebrate and encourage a positive outlook on life.
Tees for Change are fair trade and made under sweatshop-free conditions from 100% organic cotton or 70% bamboo/30% organic cotton. The cotton is cultivated without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, which is good for the environment and for the workers who grow and manufacture the shirts. Unfortunately to many in the fashion industry, green is a color that we try to describe creatively. Moss, mint, chartreuse, hunter, forest, lime, olive, spring leaf … so many options to describe what is no more than a color that goes in and out of style just like hemlines, clothes volume and purse size.
But to an ever-increasing group of dedicated people, creating green fashion (or fashion created with ecologically sound materials and practices) is a passion. There are a group of designers, models and shoe mavens who are blazing new ground and driving development of new materials that have not been a part of the standard pallet available to the designers and consumers alike. In a world where celebrities create trends, stylist Linda Medvene is at the forefront of Hollywood’s new green obsession, eco-fashion. Green no longer refers just to cool cash, but to an emerging lifestyle for stars who are increasing the demand for organic fabrics and eco-friendly clothing options.
We recently checked in with Linda to get the dirt on life as a celebrity stylist and her environmentally conscious clientele.
Q: How/When did you first become interested in eco-friendly fashion?
A: I have been interested in eco friendly fashion for some time now. I feel very strong about saving the planet and being aware of how we can help. I have been telling my clients and my child about eco clothing. It is becoming part of our healthy lives. All people that I talk to have become aware of eco friendly fashions or are becoming aware of it and the benefits it will have on us long term. The more aware we are of the good it will do, the better off we will all be.
Q: Who are some of your celebrity clients?
